Pirates Dominate Panthers

From the opening kickoff to the final buzzer, the Crandall Pirates dominated the North Lamar Panthers at Pirates Stadium aka The Shipyard on Friday night.

Junior Wide Receiver and kick returner Billy Myers returned the opening kickoff to the Panthers 25 yard line. Senior Running back rumbled 18 yards on the first play from scrimmage to set the Pirates up with First and Goal at the 7 yard line.  Senior Quarterback Josh Redding took it the rest of the way on the keeper and :45 seconds into the game, it was 7-0 Pirates. After a Doneric Rivers Touchdown run, the Pirates led 14-0. On the ensuing drive, an errant snap on a punt attempt ended up in the end zone covered by the Panther punter for a Safety and a 16-0 Pirate lead.

The Pirates received the free kick after the safety and it was handled by Bobby Myers at the Pirate 24 yard line and he was off to the races, taking the kick back 76 yards to the house and a 23-0 lead.  The Panthers gained a few first downs before their drive stalled a good roll on the punt pinned the Pirates deep in their own territory on the 4 yard line.

Josh Redding took the snap and turned to hand off to Doneric Rivers who did the rest.  Juking, shucking and jiving through the defense and he was off to the races. 96 yards later, Rivers had another touchdown and over 150 yards on the ground at that point.  The Pirates led 30-0.  The Pirates drove deep into Panther territory again, only to have their drive stall.  They added a field goal to extend their lead to 33-0.

Then came the wildest sequence of events on the night.

The Pirates were forced to punt in their own end of the field. The snap was errant, Josh Redding knocked it down, scrambled and got the punt away. The ball took a Pirate bounce but before it could get any further, a Pirate player downed the ball with just 4 seconds remaining in the half.  Had he let the ball roll, time would have run out and we would have went to halftime with a score of 33-0 in favor of the Pirates.

Instead, North Lamar sent their kicker out to attempt a 41 yard field goal.  He nailed it through the uprights as time expired and we went to halftime Pirates 33 – Panthers 3.

The final scoring play of the night came early in the 3rd quarter.  After a Panther punt pinned the Pirates back on the 10 yard line, a personal foul following the punt from North Lamar set the Pirates up at their own 25 yard line.  Josh Redding took the snap and once again handed off to Doneric Rivers. He was heading left, and the Panthers were there. He spun out of a tackle and went back to the right where he broke two tackles, and cut through the middle of the defense.  Josh Redding made a great block on the play cutting a trailing defender off as Rivers shifted through the defense.  Rivers then came back towards the near sideline and outran the entire Panthers defense to the endzone for an amazing 75 yard touchdown run and a 40-3 Crandall Pirates lead.

The Pirates dominated both sides of the ball all night and take home a convincing win over the North Lamar Panthers.
